Semax vs Adderall and Modafinil

Three Different Ideas About Focus

Put Semax next to Adderall and modafinil and you are not comparing three strengths of the same thing. You are comparing three different theories about what attention is and how to get more of it.

What Amphetamine Does

Adderall is amphetamine salts, and its mechanism is not subtle. It forces dopamine and noradrenaline out of the neurons that store them, and interferes with them being taken back up. The result is a lot more of both, in a hurry.

It works. Decades of trials in ADHD say it works, and nothing here is an argument otherwise. But it is fundamentally a withdrawal from your existing chemistry rather than a deposit — and the well-documented tolerance, the comedown, and the dependence risk all follow from that.

What Modafinil Does

Modafinil is quieter, and its mechanism is still argued over. The clearest piece of it is dopamine reuptake inhibition — blocking the recycling rather than forcing release — with additional effects on the orexin and histamine systems that govern wakefulness.

Practically it feels less like being pushed and more like not being tired. Its evidence base is solid for narcolepsy and shift-work sleep disorder, which is what it was approved for. Everything else is off-label use.

What Semax Does

Semax is a short peptide developed in Russia, based on a fragment of ACTH with a tail added so it survives long enough to work.

Its mechanism is a different category of thing. Rather than moving neurotransmitters around directly, the research describes it raising BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which is closer to fertiliser for neurons than to fuel. The monoamine effects that are reported look like consequences of that, not the main event.

So the pitch is not "more dopamine now". It is closer to "better conditions for the brain over weeks". Which, if true, is a genuinely different product from a stimulant — and also much harder to feel on any given Tuesday, which is why reports on it vary so much.

The Evidence Gap Is Real

This is the part that gets skipped in most write-ups.

Amphetamine and modafinil have been through Western regulatory processes with large trials behind them. Semax has not. It is a registered medicine in Russia and most of the research is Russian, often with small samples, and it has not been widely replicated elsewhere.

That is not the same as saying it does not work. It is saying that the confidence you can reasonably have in it is a different order of thing from the confidence you can have in a drug with thirty years of trials behind it. Anyone who tells you Semax is "just as good, without the side effects" is making a claim the evidence does not currently support.

The Thailand Problem

Worth stating plainly for anyone reading this here: amphetamine is a Category 1 narcotic under Thai law. It sits in the same schedule as methamphetamine and heroin, it is not recognised as having a medical use, and it cannot legally be brought into the country — including with a foreign prescription. This is not a technicality, and the penalties are severe.

Modafinil is a prescription medicine in most countries and is not something you can casually pick up either.

So for a lot of people the practical comparison is not "which of these three" — two of them are simply not available options. That does not make Semax a substitute for them. It just means the shelf is shorter than the internet implies.

What Semax Is Not

It is not a treatment for ADHD, and it is not a replacement for a medication someone prescribed you. If you are managing a diagnosed condition, that is a conversation with your doctor, not a purchase decision.

What it is: a peptide with an interesting mechanism, a real but geographically narrow evidence base, and a milder profile than the drugs it gets compared to. If you want the honest version of the pitch, that is it.
